Using and Buying Jeweler's Pliers
Instructions for Easy At-Home Maintenance of Pronged Rings
Bent-nose, gem-set or prong-closing pliers can be used for basic pronged gemstone ring maintenance.
For those that are willing to do a bit of practice and buy the right pair of pliers it is easy to do periodic at home pronged ring maintenance.
Most would probably prefer to take an expensive diamond engagement ring to a jewelers. But let's say the ring in question is a semi-precious gemstone or maybe even a cubic zirconia that was not really all that expensive. Also, those large, over-the-top, paste stone rings that are so popular can be as inexpensive as $25.
One really does not want to waste the time or money to go to a jeweler to have the prongs tightened but would prefer to not have to replace the ring if the stone drops. Also, let's face it – it can be feared that there might be somewhat of a sniff factor on the part of the jeweler if the ring is set with a CZ instead of a "real" diamond.
Willing to practice with the pliers? Here are the three pliers that will more than likely do the job tightening any loose gemstone ring prongs:
Tight Fitting Cluster Settings:
Prong-Closing Pliers - Check out out the image at the first article in this series, this is a cluster setting. Prong-closing pliers will fit into the tight spaces on this style of ring. They have a thin point on one side of the pliers that will fit into just about any space.
One side of the jaw of the pliers is positioned on the bottom of the setting; the thin side is place on top of the prong. Gently squeeze to tighten the prong back in place.
Four or Six Prong Single Gemstone Rings:
- Gem-Set Pliers - These pliers have adjustable jaws that you set prior to tightening the prong. Once the pliers are set at the right width, position one side of the jaw at the bottom, the other directly on top of the prong. Then squeeze the lever to tighten the prong. Using this type of plier provides even pressure which lessens the chance of chipping a softer gemstone.
- Bent-Nose Pliers - Check out the image below. It is apparent why these are called bent nose pliers... same theory of use as the gem-set pliers.
It's pretty much personal preference which of the two types of pliers to use on a four or six prong ring. The important thing is remember is like all things in life, practice makes perfect. It is suggested that one practice on an old ring that is no longer worn or buy a cheap ring at a discount store.
Where to Buy Pliers:
All craft type stores sell bent-nose pliers as they are a staple for the art of wire wrapping. They are quite inexpensive. The other type type of pliers can be purchased online at any jewelry supply vendor. Recommended are Contenti (does not require registration) and Rio Grande (does require registration).
